DirectShow Filter Manager is a utility for viewing, adding and removing DirectX filters (including codecs). A codec is a system component that provides compression and decompression of certain data, most often video and audio. Without the appropriate type of codec, the reproduction of films and music is impossible. Most of the standard codecs are already installed in the system from the very beginning, but for new file types, codecs need to be downloaded from the Internet and installed separately.

If you get too carried away with this process and put too many codecs, some of them begin to interfere with each other and as a result, the system works unstable or stops working altogether.

In this case, you can view the installed components and remove unnecessary ones using the DirectShow Filter Manager utility.
