If you want to free up disk space, you can disable the hibernation function if you rarely use this function. So, the main reason why you might want to disable hibernation on your computer is if you really need extra gigabytes of hard disk space.
In fact, if you are using a solid-state drive for a Windows 11 or 10 computer, it is better to disable the hibernation function in order to preserve the service life of the SSD. When the operating system goes into sleep mode, it writes the contents of its RAM to a file hiberfil.sys , and then turns off the power. In systems with solid-state drives, constant writing to the hibernation file can be dangerous to SSD health, because, unlike conventional hard drives, SSDs can only withstand a limited number of writes before the warranty is broken or canceled. That is why hibernation is disabled by default on most modern laptops with SSD drives. Hibernate Enable or Disable is a very simple portable free program for disabling or enabling hibernation.
After downloading, extract Hibernate Enable or Disable to the desired folder or directory, and then run it. The application will show you the hibernation status - if hibernation is enabled, you can see the size of your hibernation file on the Size button. To change the file size hiberfil.sys , use the Size button and select one of the appropriate options.
- Minimum size = 40% of the total installed RAM.
- Average size = 75% of the total amount of RAM installed.
- Maximum size = 100% of the total amount of RAM installed.
- Reduced size = 20% of the total installed RAM (Windows 10 only).
The utility has command line support. To see all supported parameters, use the command Hibernate.exe /? .
