Sound propagation in rods is an application that simulates the performance of laboratory work in general physics in order to study longitudinal sound waves in cylindrical rods and determine the velocity of propagation of longitudinal sound waves.
Sound waves in solids can propagate in the form of longitudinal, transverse waves, compression-expansion waves or bending waves. Elastic longitudinal waves propagate along the rod by means of a periodic sequence of compressions and stretches along the length of the rod. If the diameter of the rod is small compared to its length, the propagation velocity depends only on the elastic modulus and density of the material. In this experiment, the speed is determined by the time for which the sound pulses pass through the rod.
