TestDisk & PhotoRec is a powerful free data recovery program. First of all, it is designed to restore lost partitions and/or restore the boot area of disks if this problem is caused by software, viruses or human errors.
TestDisk can find lost partitions for file systems: DOS, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, Linux, Linux Swap, NTFS, BeFS (BeOS), BSD (FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD), Mac, ReiserFS, JFS, XFS, HFS, CramFS.
TestDisk allows:
- Fix the partition table, restore deleted partitions,
- Restore FAT32 boot sector from backup,
- Rebuild (reconstruct) the FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector,
- Fix the FAT table,
- Rebuild (reconstruct) the NTFS boot sector,
- Restore NTFS boot sector from backup,
- Restore MFT using MFT mirror,
- Define backup SuperBlock ext2/ext3,
- Recover deleted files on FAT, NTFS and ext2 file systems,
- Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3 partitions.
Included with TestDisk is a PHOTOREAC program designed to recover lost files in the memory of a digital camera (CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, Microdrive, MMC, USB Memory Drives, etc.), on hard drives and CDs. It recovers most of the major image formats, including JPEG, as well as audio files, including MP3, documents in formats such as Microsoft Office, PDF, and HTML, and archive formats, including ZIP.
