The speed of sound in the air is an application that simulates the performance of laboratory work in general physics in order to measure the propagation time of sound pulses in a Kundt tube.
Sound waves in gases are longitudinal. In this case, the group velocity is equal to the phase velocity. In this experiment, we will measure the propagation time of a sound pulse between two acoustic probes in a Kundt tube and use the result to calculate the speed of sound. The dependence of the speed of sound on temperature is investigated in the range from room temperature to 50C. The measurement result is consistent with the result obtained by Laplace.
